Mothering During Adversity: Stories from migrant South Asian mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic, 2024

 Book Editor and Illustrator.

This short book is a collection of fiction stories, adapted from qualitative research that examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on migrant South Asian mothers in B.C. Acknowledgement is given to the voices and experiences of migrant South Asian mothers and how they navigated adversity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The book reflects the challenges migrant South Asian mothers faced, and stressors that were unique to this population. Anecdotes of methods of coping and opportunities to learn new skills are also shared.

The book draws on stories told for the purposes of the research, through colourful illustrations and text. In many cases, through fiction and the use of pseudonyms, we merge the experiences shared by the women who participated in the research, as many experiences were similar. Therefore, at times, the book portrays general overviews of everyone’s comments on the pandemic.

We hope this book offers valuable insight into not only the challenges migrant South Asian women faced during the pandemic, but also how they survived and thrived. As one participant boldly stated, migrant South Asian women “are warriors.” It was a pleasure to meet and talk with every woman who gave their time for this research. We are honoured to learn from these warriors and hope others are similarly inspired by the lessons they share about coping through adversity.
